Hiring for a DTC Brand: What's Different and How to Get It Right
DTC brands hire differently. Teams are lean, roles blend brand and performance, and a wrong hire in growth or retention shows up in revenue within a quarter. A generic recruiting playbook misses most of that. Here's what's different and how to get it right.
The roles are hybrids
A DTC marketing manager might own paid social, email and influencer all at once. Titles don't map cleanly from brand to brand either. A Head of Growth at a $20M brand and at a $200M brand are different jobs. Screening on title alone misses the right people and lets the wrong ones through. Ask what channels they actually owned, what budget they ran and what the numbers did.
The best candidates are at other brands
The strongest DTC operators are usually working at a brand you admire, not applying to job posts. They respond to outreach that shows you understand their work: the channel mix, the growth stage, the category. Generic InMails get ignored.
Stage matters more than logos
Someone who scaled a brand from $5M to $30M may struggle inside a 300-person company, and the reverse is just as true. Match on stage and team size, not just recognizable names on a resume.
Speed is a competitive advantage
Good performance and retention marketers often have more than one offer in play. Five interview rounds over six weeks will lose them. Tighten the loop, decide on any take-home assignment up front, and move.
The hardest roles to fill
In my experience, these are Head of Growth, retention and lifecycle marketing, creator and social roles across TikTok, Pinterest and YouTube, ecommerce and merchandising leads, and finance leaders who understand contribution margin and inventory. These are also the roles where outbound sourcing pays off most.
What to look for in a recruiting partner
Look for someone who has hired in DTC before and can talk to your hiring managers about CAC, LTV and channel mix without a glossary. I've spent 10+ years recruiting for consumer brands including Pura Vida, Tubby Todd, Solly Baby and SpoiledChild / IL MAKIAGE. That includes filling Head of Growth, Retention Marketing Manager and social channel roles for a fast-growing DTC shapewear brand. Everything runs on a flat monthly rate with no agency fees, whether you need help with inbound, outbound sourcing or the full search.
